The Rearview and The Fairfield Mirror have announced a new merger agreement between the two student media publications that will strengthen the quality of student journalism at Fairfield University.
The announcement follows recent collaborations between both entities, including coverage of the 2024 presidential election and the Election Newscast. The agreement was months in the making and was announced to the respective staff members at the start of the spring semester.
“This was a difficult decision but after much consideration, we have decided this collaboration will push multimedia journalism forward at Fairfield,” said The Rearview’s Editor-in-Chief, Sophia Haber-Brock. “By combining our power, we hope to create a lasting impact on journalism, news and media on campus.”
As part of the merger, The Fairfield Mirror has agreed to establish a new section, Mirror Digital, featuring multimedia content, including podcasts, video interviews, and social media content. Rearview Managing Editor Lindsay Jones ‘25 will lead the new section.
“By combining The Mirror and Rearview’s resources and energy, and through a newfound emphasis on digital products, The Mirror will be able to package news in diverse ways that are digestible and engaging for the students of today,” said Max Limric, Editor-in-Chief of The Mirror.
The transition into The Mirror will be gradual and is expected to culminate by the start of the new academic year. During the following weeks, the social media accounts of The Rearview will transition into Mirror Digital branding, while therearview.org website will remain available to users through the summer.
Mirror Digital will also celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Mirror’s first online edition.
“We aim to make the Mirror Digital a brand that stays a part of Fairfield journalism and student media for decades to come,” added Haber-Brock.
Current Executive Editor Julian Nazario ‘26 will transition into a Copy Editor role at The Mirror while assisting with the execution of the merger, which includes migrating Rearview content into The Mirror’s website and creating the branding for the new multimedia section.
“The Mirror was my first experience at on-campus reporting, so while it’s going to take a while adjusting to the new systems and workflows, it’s nice to be back ‘home’,” said Nazario, who currently works as a Digital Intern at NBC New York. “While we are publishing content under a new name, our philosophy of breaking news, doing investigative reporting and using all the advantages of modern media remains unaffected.”
The Rearview’s Editor-in-Chief, Sophia Haber Brock, will take over the Mirror Digital as its head editor in the fall semester, when she returns from studying abroad. In this new position, she will continue producing the SGHB TV interview segments while mentoring students interested in multimedia content.
The Rearview was established in September 2022 as a student-run media organization that served as an outlet for community members to publish journalistic content through various mediums, acknowledging the need for a modern and responsive news platform.
