Fairfield University is home to a vibrant community that celebrates Irish heritage through the Irish Cultural Club, Irish Studies, and the experiences of students exploring their roots abroad. From cultural events to traditional dancing, students continue to embrace their Irish heritage and foster community on campus.
The Irish Cultural Club
The Irish Cultural Club, founded and presided over by Junior Nolan Heffelfinger, offers students the opportunity to engage with Irish culture and heritage. Heffelfinger, inspired by his involvement in an Irish American club in his hometown, sought to replicate that sense of community at Fairfield.
Heffelfinger strives to “create a community of people of Irish descent and those interested in learning Irish culture.” His passion for the club is reflected in his personal experiences, particularly his semester abroad in Galway, Ireland at the University of Galway in the fall of 2024. Nolan shared how his time in Ireland helped him grow spiritually and culturally, noting the strong sense of faith and pride in heritage that pervades the country.
For students of Irish heritage, their Irish heritage on campus is a meaningful part of their Fairfield experience. Junior Caroline Raymond, vice president of the Irish Cultural Club, shared how her Nana’s Irish heritage continues to inspire her. “My Nana was born in Swinford, Ireland, in County Mayo,” she explained. “I love Irish culture, whether it’s Irish food, music, or parades.”
One of the key ways students connect with their heritage is through activities in the Irish Cultural Club. They gather at the Gaelic-American Club to learn about set dancing on Thursdays, a popular monthly tradition that helps students embrace Irish culture through movement and community.
Junior Sean Huvane, an active club leader of the Irish Cultural Club, also has deep ties to his Irish heritage. “My grandparents were Irish, and my family is closely associated with our heritage because of it. I have a lot of pride in my Irish identity and love the idea of getting to share that love with others!”
Irish Studies
Through the Irish Studies minor offered at Fairfield, students can further immerse themselves in the rich history, literature, politics, and cultural studies to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Irish heritage.
In addition to academic experience, Irish Studies students can also participate in unique events hosted by the University. Recently, students have taken a field trip to Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum at Quinnipiac University, attended Q&As with famous Irish authors and enjoyed concerts, plays, and readings celebrating Irish culture.
Studying Abroad
Studying abroad in Ireland is a transformative experience for many students, offering an immersive chance to connect deeply with Irish culture and history. Heffelfinger’s time in Galway was enriched by his immersion in the local hurling community, which is an integral part of Irish life.
Huvane also studied abroad in Ireland during the Fall 2024 semester. He described the experience as transformative. “It was wonderful… I felt more connected with my culture even being exposed to the Irish language which is slowly revitalizing there.”
In Ireland, the hurling community plays a central role in the nation’s sporting and cultural life. Known for its speed, skill, and intensity, hurling draws huge crowds to matches. The connection to the game fosters a shared cultural identity, where the sport becomes a symbol of unity across Ireland.
Regarding religious traditions, Catholicism plays a significant role in Ireland. Heffelfinger reflects on how the deep-rooted Catholicism in the country influenced his faith, “Being in Ireland helped me grow in my faith as there are so many people who take pride in their Irish heritage and their faith.” This connection between religion and culture is an integral part of the experience that many students embrace during their time abroad.
Upcoming Events
There are exciting events planned for the coming months celebrating Irish culture and heritage at Fairfield. On March 24 at 7 p.m. in Canisius 010, the Irish Cultural Club will host a St. Patrick’s Day celebration. This event will feature festivities that highlight the essence of Irish culture, including Irish music, food, decorations, and dance. Later in the semester on April 27 from 12 to 3 p.m., the Gaelic Showcase will take place, featuring games of Gaelic Football and Hurling. Teams from UConn GAA, Hartford GAA, Fordham GAA, and Fairfield Prep ICC will participate in this exciting event, which promises to be a thrilling display of Irish athleticism.
