Students wait in line to ask the Office of Resident Life questions on Tuesday, April 8th. Following a new Round 2 system announced.
After a week and a half long delay, Fairfield University students received communication from the Office of Residence Life regarding round two of housing on Monday.
In the email obtained by The Mirror, the Office of Residence Life wrote, “The Round 2 process is organized a bit differently than previously shared with students. Instead of all Round 2 groups of the same class years picking on the same day, Round 2 groups will be selecting in waves based on group lottery numbers, with those with the lowest lottery numbers selecting housing during Round 2 – Pick Day 1, then the groups with the next lowest lottery numbers selecting on Round 2 – Pick Day 2, and the next groups with the lowest lottery numbers selecting housing on Pick Day 3.”
According to the housing guide, junior and senior students were supposed to pick their housing on April 3, with sophomores choosing on April 4. Now, Pick Day 1 is April 9, and Pick Day 2 is April 16. Pick day 3 is still to be determined.
The Office of Residence Life then emailed students on Tuesday letting them know which day of round two they were eligible to choose. Regarding the delays in communication, sophomore Daniella Norena-Mesa shares, “The whole process has been frustrating.”
Norena-Mesa shared with The Mirror Tuesday’s email from the Office of Residence Life. She and her group were able to get Pick Day 1, but there are limited options available for her day. For Junior/Senior Housing, which Norena-Mesa and her group are looking for, there are three 5-person units, eleven 7-person units, seven 9-person units, and six 10-person units.
Sophomore Abby Galvin, a member of Norena-Mesa’s group, shares, “The housing process this year has been really stressful… I feel like there has been very limited communication. We were supposed to register for housing last week and they pushed the date back to this week to work out the kinks in the system.”

The Mirror reached out to the Office of Residence of Life for information on what improvements they were making to the StarRez system, but they did not respond in time for publication.
Galvin adds, “This whole system with Day 1 and Day 2 pick times is way too stressful since if you get Day 1, you can stay with your group, but Day 2 makes you take whatever beds are left…I’m [also] worried about the system crashing like it did for Round 1 students. I’m trying to be optimistic but I think I’ll feel better once housing registration is over.”
