Every major has a personality, often shining through the person who accompanies that major through the way they dress, speak and express themselves. At the same time, every person has their favorite movies, TV shows and songs. But, have you ever thought about what movie, TV show and song matches your major? I am here to recommend one of each that reflects the essence of five majors. If your major is listed below, I hope these recommendations serve you well and match your vibe!
For the Math Majors:
I thought “Hidden Figures” would be the perfect movie for math majors. This 2017 drama follows three African-American women who are brilliant mathematicians at NASA. It’s a story of struggles, triumphs and mathematical puzzles.
In terms of television, there is nothing better fit than “The Big Bang Theory.” This popular American sitcom follows a group of socially-awkward scientists as they balance their life, work and relationships. This show could apply to science majors, but it is still perfect for math lovers.
“Counting Stars” by One Republic is the perfect song to listen to before a big math exam. The word “counting” is even in the title!
For the Digital Journalism Majors:
As a digital journalism major myself, I had a lot of options for this category. I thought “Zodiac” was the perfect pick for films. This crime thriller follows the true story of the Zodiac Killer, who terrorized Northern California in the 1960s-70s. Robert Downey Jr. and Jake Gyllenhaal’s characters work at The San Francisco Chronicle and they are deeply involved in the killings.
For TV shows, “The Morning Show” seemed like a perfect fit. This show goes behind-the-scenes of a fictional morning talk show. Starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, this is the perfect show to watch if you are interested in broadcast journalism.
For the song, I chose “Suddenly I See,” by KT Tunstall. This song was featured in the film “The Devil Wears Prada” which is a movie about fashion journalism and design. The song was featured in the open credits and has a feel-good vibe, perfect for an aspiring journalist.
For the Psychology Majors:
This was a fun major to choose for because there are so many psychological films and TV shows. I decided on the film “The Sixth Sense.” Set in Philadelphia in the 1990s, this thriller is about a young boy named Cole, who claims he can see dead people. A child psychologist, Malcolm, begins working with the child to try to help him. This film ends in such a huge twist that the audience would not see coming. If you are into psychology, I highly recommend this film.
For my TV recommendation, I picked “The Black Mirror.” This seven season series follows a different psychological storyline every episode. It aims to show the dark and dystopian side of modern technology. Any psychology major would love to pick this show apart as it taps into the uneasiness of this world.
In terms of songs, “no body no crime” by Taylor Swift is a pop ballad about crime, murder and justice. After being cheated on by her husband, Este, the female subject of the song, goes missing. Her friend gets revenge by killing Este’s husband. If you are a psychology major interested in true crime, I recommend giving this song a listen.
For the Education Majors:
For the education majors, I thought the movie “Matilda” was perfect. This film is about a little girl named Matilda who is mistreated by her parents and her school principal, Miss Trunchbull. It blends dark comedy and heartwarming moments that would be great for an education major. It shows the importance of having good role models in school.
For TV shows, workplace comedy, “Abbott Elementary” fits the bill. This series follows a group of dedicated teachers who deal with the highs and lows of working at a public school in Philadelphia. Despite their struggles, they are always determined to help their students succeed. This comedy is great for any education major who needs a good laugh but also an example of what their future job could be like.
For songs, I choose “We are Going to be Friends” by The White Stripes. When I was little, my elementary school would play this at the beginning and end of every school year. It’s a heartwarming, child-like song about two friends who bond over school activities. This is an adorable song that would be great to play in a future elementary education teacher’s classroom.
For the Environmental Studies Majors:
To switch things up a little, I choose a documentary for the environmental studies majors. “Our Planet” is a nature documentary narrated by world-renowned biologist and historian, David Attenborough. Available to stream on Netflix, this film highlights the beauty of our planet, perfect for an environmental studies major.
Opposite from “Our Planet,” the TV show “The 100” follows a post-apocalyptic world. 100 juvenile delinquents are sent from space to earth to see if it is survivable after a nuclear war. They quickly realize that they are not the only people living on earth. This show predicts what our planet would look like many years from now and would be an interesting watch for environmentalists.
For a song pick, I thought “Flowers In Your Hair” by The Lumineers was perfect. This song is about peace, love and cherishing the little things. It’s an adorable song that gives a sweet, whimsical vibe. It makes you want to frolic in a field of flowers.
No matter your major, there is a film, show or song perfect for anyone! Hopefully, some of these picks resonate with you. If your major was not on this list, I hope you give these recommendations a try anyway!
