With Halloween weekend right around the corner, the question on everyone’s mind is: what are we wearing?
Halloween costumes allow people the opportunity to express themselves and get creative. However, for many, deciding on a costume can be a very stressful process.
The pressure is on for college students, who are often tasked with coming up with multiple costumes to wear on various occasions throughout the weekend.
Then, of course, comes the deliberation over if the costume should be funny, cute, or perhaps scary. Should it be a well-done classic or a niche pop culture reference?
These are all questions students are faced with when deciding on which direction to take their costume planning.
The results are in, and it seems that we will see a mixed bag this year in terms of costumes.
To no one’s surprise, tons of students are planning to dress up as the generic classics. There will be the typical black cats, Disney princesses, witches, mermaids, vampires, and iconic movie characters.
A big trend this year seems to be “concept costumes,” Whether that be “kiss, marry, kill,” “party animal,” or the “American dream,” and more.
Party animal seems to have enticed a major crowd this Halloween, with multiple groups of girls planning on sporting animal print dresses and party hats.
Sophomore Isabella DiRenzo, a self-proclaimed leopard print expert, thinks this may have to do with the leopard print trend that is sweeping this generation.
“I’m being a party animal… just like everyone else. Because of the past leopard trend that just went on, I think so many people have animal pattern stuff… and I think [the party animal costumes] will be mostly cheetahs and leopards,” said DiRenzo.
Aside from party animals and other TikTok-inspired ideas, students are thinking outside of the box this year.
Sophomore Maeve Vernon plans on dressing up as the American Dream.
“I’m going to get American Flag pajamas, and if anyone asks what I am- it’s the American Dream,” explained Vernon.
Lastly, one of the more popular costume ideas this year seems to be characters from popular shows, series, and movies.
Multiple students admitted that they are planning to dress up as characters from the hit series, The Sopranos; I will admit that I am one of them, as I plan to dress up as Tony Soprano himself.
In addition to this, many students are planning on dressing as characters from The Hangover, Scooby-doo, and even Phineas and Ferb.
We will undoubtedly see some unique costumes, as well as some overdone ones, during the 2024 Halloween weekend. Regardless, students seem eager to celebrate and get a chance to show off their costumes.
