For the first time in over a decade, Fairfield men’s lacrosse is nationally ranked in the top 15, marking their highest ranking since 2014, when they peaked at No. 11. Now, with an undefeated start to the 2025 season (8-0, 1-0 MAAC), the Stags have their sights set on surpassing their program-best. As of print on Wednesday morning, the Stags are the last remaining undefeated team in the nation.
The Stag’s resume includes victories over Lehigh University, Sacred Heart University, Manhattan University, Providence College, St. John’s University, University of Massachusetts Lowell and Hampton University.
As a team, Fairfield ranks No. 1 in the nation for caused turnovers per game (12.25), while maintaining a top three scoring defense (6.88) and scoring margin (8.75). They also rank top five in scoring offense (15.62), points per game (24.88) and top 10 in assists per game (9.25) and ground balls per game (35.38).
Attackman Devin Lampron leads the Stags with 18 goals, 52 shots, and 36 shots on goal while ranking second in total points, with 22 overall. The first-year has been on fire since starting his college career, scoring in each game so far for the Stags, including five multi-goal games.
Sophomore Keegan Lynch has been a key counterpart to Lampron, tallying a team leading 15 assists and 25 points. The dynamic duo is a big part in why the Stags rank number five in the nation for points per game.
Fairfield’s goalie, Owen Hirsch, has been a force in the cage this season, ranking 11th nationally in save percentage (.596) and third in goals against average (6.71). The senior has surrendered only 44 goals this season, the second fewest in the NCAA. As the Stags look to continue their win streak, Hirsch’s performance in net will be crucial.
On Saturday, March 29, at 12 p.m., the red-hot Stags take on Stony Brook University (4-4, 0-1 CAA) on the road in Stony Brook, NY.
For the opposing Stony Brook, they rank sixth nationally in man-down defense (.833). This could be key against Fairfield, whose man-up offense has struggled early this season, converting just 21.4% of its opportunities (3-14).
The Seawolves have struggled to find consistency so far this season, averaging 9.5 goals per game while allowing 8.63. Junior Carson Boyle leads the Seawolves with 11 goals, while sophomore Justin Bonacci (10 goals, six assists) and freshman Caleb Yeung (10 goals, two assists) are not far behind.
It’s been the Stony Brook goaltending that has stepped up big, anchored by Jamison MacLachlan. The senior has been outstanding for the Seawolves, registering a .602 save percentage, ranking ninth in the nation to go along with his 8.47 goals-against average (nationally ranked 11th).
Fairfield’s high-powered offense is scoring 15.63 goals per game while outshooting opponents 402-247. On the other hand, Stony Brook is allowing just 8.68 goals per game. This matchup will likely be decided by whoever controls the tempo; if Stony Brook can slow down the game, it could cool down the red-hot Fairfield offense. However, if the Stags find their usual offensive rhythm, the Seawolves could have a hard time containing them, allowing Fairfield to put the game out of reach.
