Spooky, autumnal and oh so enchanted. Grab your ghouls and even your boos because Halloween is right around the corner! Being students in the midst of a busy semester, sometimes we lose the ‘spirit’ of the holidays in the chaos. As trick-or-treating turns into going out, some people’s goal might be strutting downtown, while others may be looking for a festive alternative. Whether you are planning to dress up, watch a movie in your pjs or are aiming at something in between, here’s a list of how to curate the perfect Halloween vibes for a boo-tiful celebration.
“Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice”
What says fall more than a pumpkin spice latte? Start the day with a cauldron cup of your favorite fall drink along with an apple crisp muffin. It will wake you up and put you in the Halloween spirit. Starbucks, Pete’s and Dunkin’ are the quintessential way to start your autumn morning. Now, you won’t go witching into your first class of the day.
“No Tricks, Just Treats”
The Writing Center, ITS and the Office of Accommodations, oh my! DiMenna-Nyselius Library’s fourth annual Trick-or-Treat will take place this Friday, Oct. 31 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.. Start with a tote bag from the lobby and walk around the Academic Commons. Get some tasty goodies from each station and even spend time with Fairfield U’s very own therapy dogs Dakota and Meeko!
Don’t forget to vote for your favorite pumpkin design for the opportunity to win a VIP Study Room for the ultimate fright: finals week (ah!). Trick-or-treating around the library will bring a sense of Halloween nostalgia from when you were little. Even though we are college students, you never are too old to tap into that childhood spirit. You can even get an FYE credit while you’re at it (looking at you, first-years!).
“Creep it Real”
After a long day of classes and trick or treating, kick off the weekend with a Halloween activity solo or with friends. Silverman’s Farm in Easton, CT is a wholesome way to create the fall vibes. You can visit their farm from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. everyday. Whether you are searching for the perfect apple, planning to visit the animals, eat tasty apple cider donuts or sit on a hayride, there are many options.
For those looking for an interactive activity with their friends or roommates, Mind Factory Escape Rooms located in Bridgeport, offers just that. Costing around $30 per person, this escape room mimics action movies with problems to solve, doors to unlock and riddles to uncover. These escape room games last for about an hour with up to ten guests. Taking part in a Mind Factory Escape Room is an ominous way to start the charmingly eerie evening.
“Calling All The Monsters“
Like our girl China Anne McLain sings, nothing says Halloween like a throwback episode of a Disney Channel Show. From the Disney Channel OGs of “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” to the classics of “Wizards of Waverly Place,” “Austin & Ally,” “Good Luck Charlie” and of course “ANT Farm,” there is something for everyone’s cup of tea (or witch’s brew). Check out “Disney’s Harrowing Halloween: Some of the Spookiest Specials From Our Childhood” by Caitlin Shea for spookier recommendations.
If the ghoulfriends and boofriends are looking for a cute movie, you can never go wrong streaming “Hocus Pocus” or “Halloweentown” on Disney+. For something more whimsical, check out movies like “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” or “Beetlejuice.” If you want to test your scare factor, turn on “It,” “A Nightmare on Elm Street” or “Friday the 13th.”
“Looking Boo-tiful”
It isn’t Halloween without dressing up in a funky costume. Some popular Halloween costume ideas this year include Indiana Jones, Wicked: Part 2, K-Pop Demon Hunters, Superman and childhood book characters. Dress up solo or with all your friends! Watch a movie and make some fun arts and crafts such as pumpkin painting or have a fun night out on the town. No matter what your prerogative is, costumes are an essential part of the holiday.
Whether you are planning to go all out and celebrate or just looking for a frightful activity, hopefully this list stirs the pot for a day filled with a mix of nostalgia and spirited fun. The Fairfield Mirror witches you a happy Halloween!
